Imperial Sunset: Fall of Napoleon 1813-14

ePub Imperial Sunset: Fall of Napoleon 1813-14 by R. F. Delderfield in History

Description

This collection offers the only single-volume treatment in English of the Lesser Antilles from the time of Columbus to the abolition of slavery. The essays show how the Lesser Antilles emerged in the 17th and 18th centuries as among the most densely populated and advanced economic zones in the world and how they served as stepping-stones for the expansion of the slave-based plantation system in the Americas.

Excellent Value for MoneyBy Thomas ReiterI was looking a good book on the aftermath of Napoleon's disastrous Russian campaign; and this was one of the few books available. Better yet; the kindle version was only $0.99!This is an easy-to -read volume about Napoleons spring and fall campaigns in 1813 and the campaign in 1814. While the book is good; and a great deal for $0.99; I didn't give it five stars because:--although the book was published in 1968--fairly recently; from the writing style the book seems like it was written much longer ago; hard to explain what i mean; but the book seems rather dated;--at least in the kindle version; no maps; a major drawback for a history of any military campaigns;--the author quotes extensively from a novel about the 1813 campaign; while the authors of the novel were veterans of the campaign so probably reflected a lot of their actual experience in the novel; I really dislike it when historians quote fiction as fact...Overall a good; cheap volume; but I'd be happy to read something better on these campaigns; with maps; if I can find it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent History of a Critical Interval in the Napoleonic EraBy Prisoner of Planet MoronThe 1813-1814 segment of the Napoleonic era; as well as the details of Napoleon's abdication; was not as familiar to me as were other aspects of his long career as First Consul and Emperor. "Imperial Sunset" filled that gap very well.Extremely readable and an excellent introduction to this particular slice of the Napoleonic era. For most readers; the level of detail will probably suffice.Based on comments from some readers; it appears that the Kindle edition may lack maps. My review is based upon a used 1968 paperback edition; purchased recently from for the staggering sum of $0.03 (plus shipping and handling; of course). My paperback has several quite legible and helpful maps. No problem there.Delderfield mentions that he utilized some background material from the 1864 French novel "History of a Conscript" by MM. Erckmann-Chatrain. That book; later translated into English; makes a fine companion to "Imperial Sunset." The authors had the opportunity to interview actual survivors of the 1813-1814 struggles; providing a convincing view of the life and attitudes of a common recruit. The novel is long out of copyright and is available from many sources; including and Project Gutenberg.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
