This is the story of a two-year journey in the time of President Thomas Jefferson along the Missouri and Columbia rivers; and over the Rocky Mountains; in search of a navigable waterway to the Pacific Ocean. This selection of journal entries provides insight into the personalities and aspirations of the explorers and their small group of men; as well as their encounters with Native Americans.

Well written and well documented chronicle of the impact of transformed livesBy Andrew CronanWell Written and documented; and very readable chronicle of the impact of the transformed lives of the followers of Jesus; and western culture was transformed as a result. He chronicles how so many of the freedoms that we take for granted and benevolences that are now common are the direct result of the life transformation that takes place when people choose to follow Jesus wholeheartedly and let His character direct their lives. Not in any way "preachy"; but fascinating and well documented research into what happened as a result (particularly) of the sacrificial lives of early followers of Jesus.7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Excellent!!By Happy TheologianThis is a great book that provides a wonderful counter-balance to the lies of secular humanists who would have us believe that Christianity is a barbaric religion that specializes in Salem witchcraft trials and inquisitions. Yes; it is true that many times; the followers of Jesus have failed to live up to their profession. Christians have done evil in the name of doing good. Yet; this book shows that it is Christianity and not paganism that provided the foundation for all that is good and enlightened in this world. If truth be told; all that is "good" in secular humanism has been stolen from Christianity; for only Christianity provides the intellectual and philosophical foundation for doing good to one's neighbor. Secular humanists pretend that they can provide a world of enlightened decency and kindness; but such behavior only makes sense if man is God's special creation that reflects the glorious image of his Maker. I majored in history in college; but I learned a lot of new information from reading this book. Alvin Schmidt is a theologian and a fine writer. He loves the Christian faith; and if you share his beliefs as I do; you will love the faith even more after reading this book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. EexcelleentBy Timothy C SeagrenA well-written book to give a person an excellent View of Christianity. The discipline of this book goes all the way back to the beginning of the church and before even and up until today. It gives a look at how we have evolved in the Christian faith some for the better and some for the worse. It is a very scholarly work with great research and references to prove the authenticity of what the author writes. It is a good read for those who are weak in the faith as well those who are unsaved. It also gives a new confidence for those who are believers and just want to have more information about the foundations of their beliefs.
