Description

African slavery was pervasive in Spain's Atlantic empire yet remained in the margins of the imperial economy until the end of the eighteenth century when the plantation revolution in the Caribbean colonies put the slave traffic and the plantation at the center of colonial exploitation and conflict. The international group of scholars brought together in this volume explain Spain's role as a colonial pioneer in the Atlantic world and its latecomer status as a slave-trading; plantation-based empire. These contributors map the broad contours and transformations of slave-trafficking; the plantation; and antislavery in the Hispanic Atlantic while also delving into specific topics that include: the institutional and economic foundations of colonial slavery; the law and religion; the influences of the Haitian Revolution and British abolitionism; antislavery and proslavery movements in Spain; race and citizenship; and the business of the illegal slave trade.

I was not prepared. That said; the quality of the actual pages was as advertised. I was able to re-bind the volume with — yes; you guessed it! — the magical duct tape; and as a reading volume it performs just fine.So three stars to remind the seller to let us know about the work we may need to do to make the libris actually usable. I am not upset — but is not possible to read a big; heavy book when its spine is broken. I fixed; it's good; but please take this caution onboard.Thank you;Mike Vlahos0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A good compilation of prior Osprey materials...By C. B. MillerThe is another compilation book made up of smaller Osprey published works. It gives the reader a good overview of the defences and fortifications of Nazi Germany from 1939 through the end of the war in Europe (April 1945).The first section; "Hitlers HQ's - command bunkers"; opens with Hitler's personal train; "Amerika" from where he oversaw the invasion of Poland and ends where he died; the "Führerbunker" in Berlin. The book goes on with sections: Germany's border defences; The Atlantic Wall; Germany's Defensive Lines in Italy; Field Fortifications; and Specialist fortifications-U-Boat (Pins) and V-Weapon (sites/bunkers). The U-Boat bunkers' section is very good with numerous photos and illustrations. Overall; the book makes a good reference guide with 300+ pages of text; illustrations; maps and photographs.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A bargain compared to buying the books individually; but since those interested in this type of material have already bought the books as they appeared over the years it is not worth the extra expense.
