Exploring the philosophical concerns of the nature of self; this book draws from two of the most influential Indian masters; Åšaá¹…kara and ÅšÄntideva. Todd demonstrates that an ethics of altruism is still possible within a metaphysics which assumes there to be no independent self. A new ethical model based on the notions of ’flickering consciousness’ and ’constructive altruism’ is proposed. By comparing the metaphysics and ethics of Åšaá¹…kara and ÅšÄntideva; Todd shows that the methodologies and aims of these Buddhist and Hindu masters trace remarkably similar cross-cutting paths. Treating Buddhism and Hinduism with equal respect; this book compares and reinterprets the Indian material so as to engage with contemporary Western debates on self and to show that Indian philosophy is indeed a philosophy of dialogue.

Antonescu and his role in the Holocaust.By Kevin M QuiggAs the book points out; anti-semites were not just in Germany during World War II. In Romania; the Iron Guard also played a role in terrorizing the Jewish and Gypsy population. Antonescu as the strongman and dictator followed these policies and let the Jews take the punishment for a terror attack on a Romanian command post. At his trial; Antonescu seemed to lay the blame on others; but it seemed he had specific knowledge of the pograms being done on the Jews and Gypsies. However; he also had to follow the morale of the Romanian population; and this indicates that many did not want their fellow countrymen hurt; and so Jews and other minorities in the main provinces of Romania did not suffer the Holocaust as those from Bessarabia (present day Moldavia). This is an interesting read about the fortunes of a people and their choice of government. Romania and Antonescu made the wrong choice and lost territory and lives. One wonders what would have happened if King Michael or the two main political parties had made a more careful move in the alignment of their nation. Antonescu bet wrong and lost his reputation and life. Romania made an initial poor choice; and then changed sides. However they became a satellite of the Soviet Union; much as Antonescu's Romania became a satellite of Nazi Germany.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
