From the #1 bestselling author of History's Greatest Generals comes an exciting new paperback book on the greatest explorers in history and how their discoveries shaped the modern world Whether it is Rabban Bar Sauma; the 13th-century Chinese monk commissioned by the Mongols to travel West form a military alliance against the Islam; Marco Polo; who opened a window to the East for Europe; or Captain James Cook; whose maritime voyages of discovery created the global economy of the 21st century; each of these explorers had an indelible impact on the modern world. This book will look at the 11 greatest explorers in history. Some travelled for religious piety; such as Ibn Battuta; who travelled from North Africa to Indonesia in the 1300s; visiting every Islamic pilgrimage site between -- and becoming counselor to over 30 heads of state. Others travelled for profit; such as Ferdinand Magellan; who wanted to consolidate Spain's holdings on the spice trade. Still others travelled for discovery; such as Ernest Shackleton; who led two dozen men to the bottom of the world in an attempt to cross Antarctica on foot. Whatever their reason for discovery; these explorers still inspire us today to push the limits of human achievement -- and discover something about ourselves in the process.

It will give you a basic overview of the mystery surrounding the colony of Roanoke. However; I have always believed it to be this great big; baffling mystery; even in its day. Yet this book pointed out; and it makes sense; that at the time the English were not surprised the colonists were gone; they were just interested in finding them. Good start to a more in depth study of the subject.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. This was a very thorough historical review explaining the turbulence ...By AlexandraThis was a very thorough historical review explaining the turbulence that existed between Spain and England and the impact it had on the 1st settlers at Roanoke. The tragedy was these brave seekers of a new land were literally left abandoned awaiting the return of supply ships in a very new land. While the book was clear in terms of the times it left no further clues than the colonists were either killed or absorbed into the surrounding native american tribes..It is likely that based on grey-eyed Lumbees the lost colonists are indeed descendants of that firs settlement.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful Historical ReadBy Nora CharlesHistory's Greatest Mysteries: The Lost Colony of Roanoke by Charles River Editors is a concise historical narrative of the settlement and later; the eventual disappearance of the colonists on Roanoke Island; located on the outer banks of present day North Carolina. This book provides remarkable in-depth information on the inception of establishing a colony to; and including; the search for the lost survivors.I was quite impressed with the historical information covered in this book. Included are segments from letters and narratives which give rich insight. A quick read; full of fascinating facts.
