I especially liked the new introduction by Walter Laqueur in the front ...By depThe incredible story of Sim Kessel a French Jew that fought in the resistance and was arrested by the Nazi's in July 1942. Sim was in his early 20's and a bit young and foolish. After nearly being caught by the Nazi's with a suitcase full of guns; he leaves the guns and is rescued by a French railroad worker. Going back to the same place he is almost arrested again. Even though he was rescued again and hidden for a few days; ultimately the Nazi's caught up with him. He was then tortured for two awful weeks and eventually sent to the holding camp of Drancy. After nine months in Drancy; he was shipped with a train full of other prisoners to Auschwitz. Being young and stubborn; Sim managed to survive Auschwitz until November 1944. After a failed escape attempt; he and four other prisoners were sentenced to death by hanging. Unbelievably; the rope broke in the attempt to hang him. How many people can say that at Auschwitz? Not too many. I originally read this as a library book about a year ago. I especially liked the new introduction by Walter Laqueur in the front of the book; it explains a lot. Even though this book really shows mans inhumanity to man; it also shows what you can go through and still survive. A very powerful message.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. How to stay alive in hellBy SAMLike Sam says; lady luck; rest; food and some friends make all the difference. I will not die today; maybe tomorrow but not today I have read many survivors books and they are all different. Hell is the same hell but everyone experiences just different enough to make every story so real! I admire them all so much. Friends think I'm weird to read survival books; they are all different stories. The first books I ever read were. Biographies and I never got over the enjoyment.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Super bookBy ACWThis is an unbelievable story of a French Jewish resistance fighter who is caught and sent through the NAZI labyrinth of brutality from the German French Prisons all the way to Auschwitz where the man is hanged by the SS and lives to tell about it.
