SanchezUntil buying this book; I'd never even seen any one of the series; so I don't know if my comments are applicable to the rest of the series. It has dozens of black and white scale drawings of the Beagle. Many of them are as she appeared in the 2nd round the world voyage; the one that C. Darwin was on. Makes sense; as this was the voyage that really made the HMS Beagle famous. There is a scale drawing printed on the inside of the dust jacket of this 2010 edition; I don't know if it was the same with the earlier editions. The first 50 pages are mostly text discussing the ships history and the last 80 pages are filled with drawings. There are about two dozen or so black and white photos (~3x5 inch); some slightly larger; near the middle of the book. The photos are of a model that was built by the author. There is NO COLOR inside of the book; only color image is the one printed on the DJ; this was a bit of a surprise for me; nothing major. There are also many drawings of the ships boats; standing/running-rigging; rigging points fittings; masts/spars; hull structure; armament and overall layout of the ship at various stages of her career. If your looking for a good reference for building a model or doing a painting of the Beagle; this should do the trick; depending on how much detail you plan on including. There is very little info or drawings dealing with internal hull detail; a page or so of line perspective drawings. If your looking for info on building a full scale replica; your nuts; but when it comes to all the intimate detail that many modelers/builders want it will help with the exterior but fall short on interior details.I plan on buying other titles from this series.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Unique Resource for the Serious Ship Model CrafterBy G. P. SmithWhen I set out to research the structure and details of HMS Beagle; I assumed that such a famous ship would have been thoroughly studied and recorded. Well; now it is; thanks to Karl Heinz Marquandt. He set out with the same expectation; but found he had to do a lot of digging. From topgallant mast to keel; bowsprit to rudder; Marquandt has recorded and presented numerous detailed diagrams of the hull; fittings; standing rigging; running rigging; sales; armament and more. Even if you do not plan to carve and build your own model; if you share a fascination for these vessels of a bygone age; this book belongs on your shelf.13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Another good Anatomy of the Ship bookBy Grayhog68While this is another great book in the series; I found it lacking in several departments when compared to other such books. Of course it must be understood that not a great deal of hard evidence is available on this ship as there is on the USS Constitution or the HMS Victory (which both still exist). In a couple of cases; the author seemed to place items on the ship to ease the making of the model rather than to conform to the facts available from other sources. Nevertheless; if a single point of reference is needed for the HMS Beagle; this is; without a doubt; the best available.
