Guns for Cotton: England Arms the Confederacy

ePub Guns for Cotton: England Arms the Confederacy by Thomas Boaz in History

Description

Henry Martyn Lazelle (1832–1917) was the only cadet in the history of the US Military Academy to be suspended and sent back a year (for poor grades and bad behavior) and eventually return as Commandant of the Corps of Cadets. After graduating from West Point in 1855; he scouted with Kit Carson; was wounded by Apaches; and spent nearly a year as a “paroled” prisoner-of-war at the outbreak of the Civil War. Exchanged for a Confederate officer; he took command of a Union cavalry regiment; chasing Mosby’s Rangers throughout northern Virginia. Lazelle’s service was punctuated at times with contention and controversy. In charge of the official records of the Civil War in Washington; he was accused of falsifying records; exonerated; but dismissed short of tour. As Commandant of Cadets at West Point; he was a key figure during the infamous court martial of Johnson Whittaker; one of West Point’s first African American cadets. Again; he was relieved of duty after a bureaucratic battle with the Academy’s Superintendent.

Must read for anyone interested in the War Between The States.By william wetherell; IIThis work covers an aspect of the relationship between the Confederate government and England that started before Fort Sumpter. It sheds light on events that I have not found in such detail; under one cover; in over sixty years of reading about The War Between The States(I will soon be seventy-six). The research is impressive and the foot notes will lead you to even more sources for additional reading. This book is a must read for students of this period of history. This work is scholarly; but is written in the concise language of a true wordsmith. Thomas Boaz has made a valuable contribution to historical fact.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Light but informative readBy Michael E. SteinA great book to introduce the subject. The south belives that the immediate self imposed embargo of cotton will convince european powers to join thier effort. This and other strategies to create empathy to the southern cause; provide trade for needed war material and the effects of the blockade are covered to provide an adequate understanding. Nice presentation of data without approaching the eyes glaze over phase. One that I would encourage my 12 year old to read.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The enduring confederacyBy Mike NA must for civil war fans; important background detail that; in part; explains why the Confederacy was able to endure the northern onslaught for so long. Little known facts are presented that will cause the reader to say; 'so that's why they were able to do that...' An easy going book to read; not too heavy.
