Grant's Last Battle: The Story Behind the Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant (Emerging Civil War Series)

DOC Grant's Last Battle: The Story Behind the Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant (Emerging Civil War Series) by Chris Mackowski in History

Description

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; large numbers of Swedish immigrants came to Michigan seeking new opportunities in the United States and relief from economic; religious; or political problems at home. In addition to establishing early farming communities; Swedish immigrants worked on railroad construction; mining; fishing; logging; and urban manufacturing. As a result; Swedish Americans made significant contributions to the economic and cultural landscape of Michigan; a history this book explores in engaging and illustrative depth. Swedes in Michigan traces the evolution of hard-working people who valued education and assimilated actively while simultaneously maintaining their cultural ties and institutions. Moving from past to present; the book examines community patterns; family connections; social organizations; exchange programs; ethnic celebrations; and business and technical achievements that have helped Swedes in Michigan maintain a sense of their heritage even as they have adapted to American life.

I enjoyed the positive reviews of Grant's career by Chris Mackowski ...By Robert BoosPerhaps because I've become angry at the criticisms levelled at U. S. Grant; especially by two mean-spirited ex-Confederate generals; Jubal Early and Daniel Harvey Hill; I enjoyed the positive reviews of Grant's career by Chris Mackowski and by a woman author in a separate book whose name escapes me as I write this review. I visited Mount McGregor as a high school or early college student and was impressed by the area and the cottage that Grant used to complete his memoirs.Grant's Last Battle's only drawback is the several typographical errors that I encountered. These should be corrected.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Good description of a period in Grant's life which needed to be toldBy James PalmerI liked this little book. Perhaps not great literature; but a good insight into Grant; whose reputation has suffered through the historical description of his presidency. I found I liked him better after reading this. The many photos of the people described in the book added a great deal. Other historians should do so well.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great portrayal of a great storyBy James CummingsWritten in a style that kept my attention. Even though I knew the story; I felt I had to keep reading to the end. Grant is an often misunderstood character but Mackowski humanizes him in a way that draws you into his family
