The inspiring story of the woman at the center of the historic discrimination case that inspired the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act; her fight for equal rights in the workplace; and how her determination became a victory for the nationLilly Ledbetter always knew that she was destined for something more than what she was born into: a house with no running water or electricity in the small town of Possum Trot; Alabama. In 1979; when Lilly applied for her dream job at the Goodyear tire factory; she got the job. She was one of the first women hired at the management level. Nineteen years after her first day at Goodyear; Lilly received an anonymous note revealing that she was making thousands less per year than the men in her position. When she filed a sex-discrimination case against Goodyear; Lilly won--and then heartbreakingly lost on appeal. Over the next eight years; her case made it all the way to the Supreme Court; where she lost again. But Lilly continuted to fight; becoming the namesake of President Barack Obama's first official piece of legislation. Both a deeply inspiring memoir and a powerful call to arms; Grace and Grit is the story of a true American icon.

Read This Book--And Pray for Cardinal GeorgeBy Kimball Ladien; MDUnlike Cardinal George's first book; The Difference God Makes;(also excellent); God In Action is; perhaps; even more accessible to a broad lay audience who should; most definitely; READ THIS BOOK! God In Action ranges from a review of God's role as "the Primary actor" in American society all the way through; looking for God's action in "the movement towards unifying the human family in our day." Cardinal George does a brilliant (and very readable) service to us all--outlining how God can be a very real presence in all that we do on an individual; family; community and even global level. On a certain very real level; Cardinal George has given us a blueprint of how; with God's help; we can work to bring people together regardless of their backgrounds. Simply put; we are all God's Children. My favorite quote from God In Action comes towards the end of Cardinal George's work when he writes: "God is at work where charity and self-sacrifice and forgiveness unites people who would otherwise be separated; where good consequences overcome evil actions; where hope remains constant in the midst of despair; where new life comes from death." As many may know; well after writing God In Action; Cardinal George was diagnosed with a return of his cancer after several years in remission. (It was during these years that Cardinal George wrote these two excellent books--which is; in and of itself a blessing.) Ultimately; Good Science and Good Medicine may help to "save" Cardinal George; God willing. But it is "Good Faith" as described by Cardinal George that is at least as important in giving meaning and substance to the "Brave New World" that may otherwise be before us. By people of goodwill of ALL FAITHS and backgrounds (even atheists) reading this book and applying its clearly written principles; the World can truly be a better place--not just at Peace with our neighbors here and around the world; but at Peace with God who is in everything and everywhere that we might be. May we all pray for Cardinal George not only to survive his cancer but to help place the principles of God In Action into actual practice both here in America and; over time; around the World. The more that we all read and understand the hopeful words of Cardinal George; the more that we may all choose to join him on this truly Righteous Path. May these be goals truly worthy of us all. God bless Cardinal George and us all as well; Kimball Ladien; M.D.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful.
