The Commissar Vanishes offers a unique and chilling look at how one man--Joseph Stalin--manipulated the science of photography to advance his own political career and erase the memory of his victims. Over the past 30 years. author and photohistorian David King has assembled the world's largest archive of doctored photos from the Soviet era; the best of which are featured here.

Needs more objectivityBy Frequent ShopperThe rearrangement of Central European borders by the Versailles Treaty and the subsequent destruction of generations of old communal relations were instrumental and contributed to the severe human rights abuses in Karpatalja; now referred to as Subcarpathian Rus. For over a millennium; this region was part of the Hungarian Kingdom and played an important part in the attempt to shake off Hapsburg hegemony after the Ottoman wars. While the book brings notable insights; it is trying to be politically correct and represents an anti-Hungarian point of view. Repeatedly calling Hungarians as colonizers and occupiers even though the region was part of Hungary for over a millennium; refers to Hungarian massacres without verifiable sources; using instead hearsay; detracts from the value of its presentation.Figure 2 of the book has the caption "The empty field in the place of the old Jewish cemetery in Mukachevo; Ukraine; 2012." During our contemporary visit to Mukachevo; we visited the well kept Jewish cemetery where even one can get the information where certain individuals or families are interred. It is NOT a plowed field.Segal fails to dwell on the massive deportations and mass violence committed by the "liberators" of 1944. Surely an objective appraisal of the events in Karpatalja (Subcarpathian Rus) still needs to be written.
