Fantastic history of a hugely important regimentBy MJCA history of Illinois in the Civil War can't be written without emphasis on the service of the 7th Illinois. The war for IL regiments literally started and ended with the 7th. They were the first regiment raised and fought until the surrender of the Confederates in the Carolinas. This book does a wonderful job of outlining the commanders; campaigns; and battles; while also giving us personally vignettes of the front line soldiers and officers.I can't recommend this book highly enough for those seeking history on important Illinois regiments. If for no other action than the brave stand at Allatoona Pass; this regiment should be known and revered. Add to that the battles of Fort Donelson; Shiloh; Corinth; and Bentonville; and the regiment's service reads like a timeline of important battles in the Western Theater.
