From Freedom To Slavery: The Rebirth of Tyranny in America

DOC From Freedom To Slavery: The Rebirth of Tyranny in America by Gerry Spence in History

Description

In 72 B.C.; in the heart of Rome's Mediterranean empire; a slave named Spartacus ignited one of the most violent episodes of slave resistance in the history of the Roman Empire--indeed in the world annals of slavery. This volume organizes original translations of 80 Greek and Latin sources into topical chapters that look at the daily lives of slaves trained as gladiators and those who labored on farms in Italy and Sicily; including accounts of revolts that preceded and anticipated that of Spartacus. In a carefully crafted introductory essay; Shaw places Spartacus in the broader context of first and second century B.C. Rome; Italy and Sicily and explains why his story continues to be a popular symbol of rebellion today. The volume also includes a glossary; chronology; selected bibliography; three maps; an annotated list of ancient writers; and questions for consideration.

MillerA highly readable and valuable insight into the critical political condition in our country today; a condition so threatening to the future of our nation that I recommend it to everyone. I only wished I had read it ten years ago when it was originally published. I was so impressed that I bought a copy for a friend.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Don't get me wrong I feel living in a capitalistic socitey is great. What are the alternativesBy Frank B.Very interesting book that makes you think! Basically you would think the book has something to do with race and that is not the case. It's about how we are all slaves to the system we call capitalism. Don't get me wrong I feel living in a capitalistic socitey is great. What are the alternatives ?6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. All that glitters is not goldBy Travis BickleIf you are looking for any insight from the author into his association with Randy Weaver you will be sorely disappointed. There was very little written with respect to Weaver. Most of what was included in this book I have read in other publications. If interested try; Every Knee Shall Bow; by Jess Walter; or; Ambush at Ruby Ridge; by Alan Bock.Gerry Spence is like a kindly old grandfather type. Full of sage advice and wisdom that is perhaps best understood in light of his rustic background. At times powerful and dynamic; at other times pompous and imperfect. I found myself reading aloud to my family some very enlightened and impactful prose. Other times I found myself laughing at his sophmoric attempts at analogy.Overall; I have enjoyed reading this fine book. The author makes some very intriguing points with respect to the condition of humanity at the end of the 21st century. However; I found his writing style to be irritating and bizarre at times. Like many old timers full of wisdom; fun to listen to; as long as you take him with a grain of salt.
