Two Welsh officers of the cavalry regiment; Edwin Griffith; and his nephew; Frederick Philips; kept contemporary journals and wrote extensive letters home during those years. Remarkably; the writings survived in a collection largely overlooked by historians; making them one of the few new sources of this type that have come to light in our time. Ably edited by Gareth Glover; the papers offer an opportunity to view Britain's army without the overlay of Victorian patriotism that so often surrounds Wellington's army. Battles are mentioned; Griffith died at Waterloo. But for cavalrymen; battles were usually brief charges and withdrawals. Instead; the routine yet dangerous activities of scouting; foraging; and skirmishing define most combat. The daily business of obtaining food; shelter; and replacement horses takes far more time. And the almost endless entries focused upon access to superior officers; promotion opportunities; protocol; and other dynamics of regimental politics speak much of the aristocratic world of an army officer.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
