Birth of a White Nation is a fascinating new book on race in America that begins with an exploration of the moment in time when "white people;" as a separate and distinct group of humanity; were invented through legislation and the enactment of laws. The book provides a thorough examination of the underlying reasons as well as the ways in which "white people" were created. It also explains how the creation of this distinction divided laborers and ultimately served the interests of the elite. The book goes on to examine how foundational law and policy in the U.S. were used to institutionalize the practice of "white people" holding positions of power. Finally; the book demonstrates how the social construction and legal enactment of "white people" has ultimately compromised the humanity of those so labeled. Jacqueline Battalora was born in Edinburg; Scotland and lived in Antwerp; Belgium for six years before her family relocated to Victoria; Texas. It was this experience of attending high school and middle school in Victoria that informed her understanding of race in America. While she is currently a lawyer and professor of sociology and criminal justice at Saint Xavier University; she is also a former Chicago Police officer. She holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University and has been engaged in anti-racist training since the mid 1990s. Publisher's website: http://sbpra.com/JacquelineBattalora

RA MasonI give the author and content of the book 5 stars; but the publisher deserves 2.This is a great book; as a Mason and Civil War historian; I highly recommend it. I enjoyed the story of how the monument came to be and thoroughly enjoyed the profiles of many of the Masons involved in the battle. You can read the book cover to cover in an afternoon and learn a lot. I look forward to adding it to my Lodge's library. As for the publisher; I don't think there was any copy editing done whatsoever. The typos and grammatical mistakes are too numerous to count. It doesn't take away from the content of the book; but it makes reading it like receiving a thousand paper cuts. For the record; I am a high school English teacher; so the mistakes stand out to me like a beacon on a moonless night. Maybe it won't be so glaring to others.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very Helpful Volume for AllBy Kenneth Smith; IIAs a Mason; this volume has helped me to make presentations at various lodges on the subject. In addition to being a mason I am "War Between the States;" history buff and I do various public history events; this compact text allows for discussions aside from the usual which heightens the discussion of the war and especially the human aspect at such a pivotal battle and explains the 'Friend to Friend' monument very well. All around it is a very very helpful book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Book!By Bryan DietzlerGreat book! Learning a lot about my fellow Masons in the Civil War.
