Despite an outpouring of scholarship on the Holocaust; little work has focused on what happened to Europe’s Jewish communities after the war ended. And unlike many other European nations in which the majority of the Jewish population perished; France had a significant post‑war Jewish community that numbered in the hundreds of thousands. Post-Holocaust France and the Jews; 1945–1955 offers new insight on key aspects of French Jewish life in the decades following the end of World War II. How Jews had been treated during the war continued to influence both Jewish and non-Jewish society in the post-war years. The volume examines the ways in which moral and political issues of responsibility combined with the urgent problems and practicalities of restoration; and it illustrates how national imperatives; international dynamics; and a changed self-perception all profoundly helped to shape the fortunes of postwar French Judaism.Comprehensive and informed; this volume offers a rich variety of perspectives on Jewish studies; modern and contemporary history; literary and cultural analysis; philosophy; sociology; and theology. With contributions from leading scholars; including Edward Kaplan; Susan Rubin Suleiman; and Jay Winter; the book establishes multiple connections between such different areas of concern as the running of orphanages; the establishment of new social and political organisations; the restoration of teaching and religious facilities; and the development of intellectual responses to the Holocaust. Comprehensive and informed; this volume will be invaluable to readers working in Jewish studies; modern and contemporary history; literary and cultural analysis; philosophy; sociology; and theology.

It is well written and well researched; but it is so much more. The authors did an excellent job introducing us to Freddie Steinmark; but there is a depth to this story that I can't explain. Who he was in this life is evident in his values of the Faith; his family; and football as well as baseball. There's more. You read about how these values; as we call them in our culture; helped him achieve his seemingly impossible goals and face challenges like cancer. The story is such an inspiration that it comes alive for the reader. As you read; you realize that he lived his life in an uncomplicated fashion. He lived his Faith; and you find yourself wanting what he had. This book should be required reading in high school; because Freddie was and still is an example of how we are to live our Faith. He relied on God; not his own strength in everything. This is evident in how he prayed the rosary before games and at other times when presented with life's challengers. For example; when; his friend lost a brother in Vietnam; Freddie didn't try to come up with a comforting saying found in a sympathy card. He simply knelt and began praying the rosary. He didn't have to know what to say or do to heal his friend. That belonged to God alone. Freddie Steinmark let God work through him. That is exactly what I want my children to learn. What's more: I have written a bout him in the past tense. That is an inaccurate way to portray him. Even though he has passed into. Eternity; he still lives and so will we. I recommend this book to everyone whether or not you share is Faith. Read this book!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great book!!!By Cynthia BBower Yousse is just about in the same category as Pat Conroy. He's one of the only story-tellers that is also such a good writer that he can tell a story with sports as the background and still hold MY interest!I was pretty much dissolved into tears for much of the book. It tore my heart to pieces even though it was very inspirational. The way Yousse his co-author wove into the story the dramatic historical events that were also going on at the time as Freddie's heartbreaking story was perfect. My husband I were in Italy during those very years; living a glamorous idyllic life as newlyweds; new parents; students; teachers; and models; we read about Vietnam; politics; assassinations; all the other upheaval of the time in the Italian papers but it all seemed like a universe away from us. We were and always have been just plain ole lucky. Thanks to Bower his co-author; this was clearly brought home to me with such a beautifully-written account of Freddie Steinmark's short; tragic; but incredibly exceptional beautiful life.I highly recommend this excellent book.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. if ever a book deserved to be on a Best Seller listBy .MyerMyerFor all the right reasons; if ever a book deserved to be on a Best Seller list; this is the book! Well written; honest and true story of a runt sized young man who became an all American hero by putting his faith and his family first most every day of his life. Suitable for all ages to read although far too short. But so was Freddie's life...This is a keeper and will always have a prominent place on my bookshelf.
