As the study of the American Civil War is becoming more popularized by the 150th anniversaries of the battles; it is important to keep in mind the narrative-type history that draws so many to the study of this conflict. Kunstler stands out as an artist because he depicts the struggles of everyday men and not merely the over-told heroics of the officers. Granted; Kustler's art draws largely from CW movies; especially "Gods and Generals;" and so readers will notice many paintings are based off of scenes of these films; (and consequently; are seemingly pro-southern).Kunstler is masterful in his ability to capture the fear; pain and honor on the faces of the men and women painted. He has captured the essence of the war with paint and brush. The book is well worth the price; and will; with no doubt; give readers the satisfaction of beautiful artwork (and early sketches of the portraits).0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. KonopkaThis is an absolutely magnificent and beautiful "coffee table" book! The paintings contained within it are beautiful (I hate to keep using that word; but it fits perfectly) and tell the story of the Civil War in a way that mere words cannot convey. That is not to say that the commentary running alongside the paintings is superfluous; for it is not. It's just that the paintings so overshadow everything. I've never seen paintings or books by this extremely talented artist before; so this work came as quite a revelation to me. The paintings get the viewer right into (almost) the pictures themselves. It's as if we were participants in the action going on in the pictures; they feel so lifelike. I could go on and on about praise for this work; but I will just say to see it for yourself; and I am sure that you will agree with me: this is a "do not miss" work!
