The Civil War Flags of MissouriBy Joe OwenGlenn Dedmondt who is noted for his excellent books on Confederate Flags has added the Civil War Flags of Missouri in the series. The state of Missouri went thru absolute chaos before and during the Civil War years. It was a state that was "split" when it came to seceding from the Union to join the Confederacy; or remain in the Union. As a result; it was a bloody chaotic time when brother literally fought against brother; split towns apart and families. When South Carolina fired upon Ft. Sumter in Charleston Harbor in April of 1861; the news quickly spread to Western Border States such as Missouri; Kansas; Nebraska; and Arkansas. Many towns in these states formed their own militias and the ladies of the towns sewn flags that showed their devotion to the newly formed CSA. In Missouri these flags quickly became "hotbeds" of contention as those in the towns that remained loyal to the Union tried tear them down or Union troops going thru the towns in Missouri seized and captured the flags. There was a lot of bloodshed blamed on both sides and it was a dangerous time. Many of these flags were destroyed or didn't survive the war; but there was also many that did and are now preserved to this day in museums; state archives; and private collections. Later in the war; Missouri Regiments would received the standard regimental flags issued by the Confederacy and these flags were flown at such places as Vicksburg and other important battles. Also presented are the flags flown by Missouri Glenn Dedmondt once again has done an outstanding job researching; illustrating; and giving the history of these flags and the militias; towns; and regiments that flew the Civil War Flags of Missouri. This is an OUTSTANDING series of books by Mr. Dedmondt; he has also published Civil War Flags of Alabama; Arkansas; North Carolina; and South Carolina and are a MUST HAVE to any serious Civil War Scholar; Historian; or student and make a fine addition to any Civil War library.
