Ranging from Plato in antiquity to Martha Nussbaum in the present era; the authors of the seventy readings included in The Liberal Arts Tradition present significant and exemplary views addressing liberal arts education over the course of its history; particularly in the United States. Most of the documents are newly translated or no longer available in print. Arranged chronologically; each selection is accompanied by an informative introduction and extensive explanatory notes discussing its place within the liberal arts tradition. Based upon the author's twenty-five years of experience leading seminars concerning the history of liberal education; this collection presents a uniquely comprehensive and salient set of documents; while incorporating the neglected portrayal and discussion of women within the history of the liberal arts.

The art work; photos; and accompanying background on these - at the time - state of the art pieces of machinery is outstanding. I purchased it for my son who shares my love of planes but wound up reading it cover to cover myself. The book is the perfect size measuring 9.5 x 11.5 inches with sturdy hard cover binding and a beautifully illustrated dust cover. The book highlights 10 of the most highly rated single seat fighter planes from WWII. Along with each description are the author's beautiful and detailed illustrations. He points out in the foreword that at the time there were few color photos of these planes so his artwork fills in the gaps. There are many actual photos as well as interviews with the few surviving pilots from US; Britain and Germany. I learned many things as well as an appreciation for the life and times of the men who flew these aircraft so many years ago. If you are a fan of history and WWII aircraft in particular you will definitely want to add this fo your collection. My sincere thanks to Mr. Laurier for his talent and effort to produce such a work of art. Thank you; thank you; thank you.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Greatest WWII fighter book of all time. Breathtaking art combined with historical facts and specs is unique. He was very nice to help me all he couldBy Old GoatI once contacted Jim Laurier concerning a pair of models I was making after a painting of his. He was very nice to help me all he could. So; when I saw this book; I snatched it up. It's worth every penny I paid for it. Jim has taken 10 fighters from WWII; inserted paintings and pencils of them in combat; ect.; put comprehensive articles describing the plane; its development; how many were made and which theater of the War they were used in. I really like this book and it will come in handy as I make more WWII plane models.
