He knows every piece of information and trivia about every battle; unit; general of the war. I found hard to follow occasionally due to the format of a transcribed lecture. He will mention something in passing and then it will be mentioned later in the chapter and it turns out to be an important fact.My one complaint is there should be more maps.My cousin who works for the National Parks Service told me she met Mr. Bears once. She told me she found him to be very strange. He didn't make eye contact when he spoke to you.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. walking encyclopedia on american civil warBy peter richardsonhad the golden opportunity to meet the author in Brisbane Queensland Australia when the American Civil War Roundtable of Queensland sponsored his visit to talk on his years spent as a park ranger lecturing at the many battlefields. At 90 years of age he has great recall and stood as if mesmerised ;eyes closed ;as he he enlightened us on Misconceptions of the American Civil War ;Why the South Lost and Gettysburg. I also had one on one timespent with him. How great is that and he signed my/his book for me. Many memorable photos made the weekend a wonderful part of my life. Thanks to Fields of Honor arrived ahead of time and I read many pages before I met Edwin C.Bearss and completed this well written book on my return to my home town. His writing makes subject so entertaining ;yet easy ;to comprehend those involved in each battle and the side they chose to fight on. I understand now why his books have sold so well and I will look forward to the next one I choose at 's amazing array of good books. Regards Pete R.49 of 50 people found the following review helpful. On the GroundBy Christian SchlectA special book for those with a military bent of mind and an interest in our Civil War. Written as if spoken to you directly on each battlefield by a guide of immense knowledge of both the movement of troops and the local terrain. Every young officer in the current U.S. military should read and learn from Edwin C. Bearss; an extraordinary career employee of the U.S. National Park Service. As for battles; I learned the most from the chapter on The Wilderness. The author brought me a much better understanding of this important battle than I had prior to taking up his "Fields of Honor."Finally; the selection of the limited number of photographs presented in this volume was done by someone with a gift for this sort of thing.
