Field Hospital: The Church's Engagement with a Wounded World

ePub Field Hospital: The Church's Engagement with a Wounded World by William T. Cavanaugh in History

Description

On September 4; 1805; in the upper Bitterroot Valley of what is now western Montana; more than four hundred Salish people were encamped; pasturing horses; preparing for the fall bison hunt; and harvesting chokecherries as they had done for countless generations. As the Lewis and Clark expedition ventured into the territory of a sovereign Native nation; the Salish met the strangers with hospitality and vital provisions; while receiving comparatively little in return.

Can be slow going; but worth the readBy PhilipCavanaugh is one of the best practical theologians alive and one of the few theologians who can be mentioned in the same breath as his mentor; Stanley Hauerwas. This work is a catch-all of multiple ideas that either supplement his larger works; discuss issues that do not necessarily require book length explorations; or interact with others working in public thought. His insights are unique and place the church front and center of answering the biggest questions of the day. Throughout it all is Cavanaugh's desire to bypass the false dichotomy of individualism or corporatism as given by penultimate institutions such as the market or the state. The work is not always approachable though and at times can veer into using complicated language that can lose laymen; but the thoughts addressed are some of the most important being discussed today and it is worth the the read.0 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
