King Professor of Maritime History at the U.S. Naval War College; between 2001 and 2009. They represent a wide historical perspective that ranges across nearly four centuries of maritime history. A number of these pieces have been published previously but have appeared in other languages and in other countries; where they may not have come to the attention of an American naval reading audience. This collection is divided into parts that deal with four major themes: the broad field of maritime history; general naval history; with specific focus on the classical age of sail; from the mid-seventeenth century to the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815; the wide scope of American naval history from 1775 to the end of the twentieth century; and finally; the realm of naval theory and its relationship to naval historical studies. They are reprinted; with only minor alterations; as the originally appeared. It is easy to see the parallels between Russia in the mid 16th century and the Kremlin of today; and gives the reader a full appreciation for why Putin is so highly regarded. Dictatorship and a hard life are baked into the average Russian and his/her expectations from life. I learned this while working in Russia immediately after the fall of communism; but I understand my own personal observations much better after reading this book; along with others from different periods in Russia's history that tell similar tales of contemporary leadership.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. He was more than terrible!By M. JantzenAn interesting insight into someone who was more than just "terrible". He writes history in a way that makes it as interesting as reading a good novel.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful Ivan is terrible but a BOSS !By Geraldvery well researched and written; this narrative serves as a perfect survey of RUssia AND Europe in the 1500sIvan is a beast; a boss and a troubled soul; yet Bobrick pulls no punches; you are there living and scheming andfighting with Ivan. an A plus effort; poignant at times; violent and perfect Biography of an enigmatic character !
