Of all of the sources of information that I have come across over the years I believe that this small 105 page book has given me a greater insight into the psychology and motivation of the gunfighters than any other source that I have come across. After all it was written by a man who was there and was one of them. Bat Masterson was not only a gunfighter himself;but also a very perceptive observer and a talented writer having finished his career as a newspaper reporter. This is not a cleansed Hollywood version;but an authenic account of toughmen who lived in a lawless and threatening environment. You will not find all of their qualities endearing; but they were adventurers and risk takers who lived in an exciting and historically signficant era. I have always felt that the reason that the image of the gunfighter created so much interest all over the world was because; while it may not be with guns; so many things in life ultimately come down to the "OK Corral" where everything is laying on the line. One of the most interesting things to me was Masterson's listing of the qualities of the successful gunfighter:1. Courage2. Experience3. DeliberationEven given the first two qualities which are absolutely essential; without "Deliberation" and the required mental control a man could not be successful as a gunfighter and Masterson gives several examples of this principle5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I would recommed this book to anyone who even has a "hint" of interest in the "Old West"By Bonnie HorwathI grew up watching (TV) Westerns; however I did not start to really appreciate them until we got "Encore Channel". (I do sometimes believe education is wasted on our youth :) ).I didn't realize how History was written into the scripts (may not the exact truth ... TV censors wouldn't have allow it! I'm still surprised that in the Theme Song for "Have Gun Will Travel" they managed then line "a soldier of fortune".I realize that has nothing to do with this book; but it did start me thinking and digging for more "facts"; to see how many facts were in the programs. So at the age of 60???? (born in 1951) I am rediscovering the Westerns of my youth????LOVE this book; not just the writing; but who wrote it; the era it was written; and of course the pictures ....once again I'm "hooked" only this time not because it practically the only thing on TV.I've already purchased other books and Kindles as well ... (Thank-you for the free download of the Kindle!!)One more point ... Mu husband is reading them as well (even asked how to us the computer!!! SHOCKER ;)1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. and the wit of good storyteller; this is Bat Masterson's real story on ...By History PrincessA little exaggeration; here and there; and the wit of good storyteller; this is Bat Masterson's real story on the "real story" of Doc Holiday; Wyatt Earp; Ben Thompson; Luke Short and other famous Old West Gunfighters and Lawmen of the West. Some of the mini-biographies are entertaining by virtue of Masterson's own acquaintance with the subject. The old photos are not all new to most that have read western history before; the but writing is one-of-a-kind. Quite the read.
