DOC F-86 Sabres of the 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing (Frontline Colour) by Warren Thompson in History

Description

The Quest series from Luath Press continues with the quest for all things Celtic; an investigation into aspects of Celtic history that have previously been neglected or lost. History is a Quest; or journey; through time. Today; as never before; there is tremendous growing interest in the history of western traditions. Since devolution and the beginning of the new Scottish Parliament; interest in Scotland is growing tremendously. In this ground-breaking book; medieval historian and Celtic scholar Dr Karen Ralls and local Scottish historian Ian Robertson describe the people; places and traditions associated with Scotland's past; exploring the history of the origin-myth of the Scots; the Declaration of Arbroath; the Stone of Destiny; Iona; the Picts; the Druids; stone circles and megalithic sites; the Celtic saints; the Culdees; the Celtic church; Scottish Arthurian traditions; the Holy Grail; the Guild traditions of medieval Edinburgh; Robert the Bruce; the battle of Bannockburn; Royal Order of Scotland; William Wallace; Rosslyn Chapel; and much more. In addition to examining historical sources from library; government; and museum archives; or academic and rare antiquarian books; the authors also bring to light some of the lesser known aspects of Scottish history from credible sources. Appendices include maps; comprehensive Bibliography; chapter Notes; and Index.

Colorful Guide to the MiG-Killing 4th FIW!By Mike O'ConnorThe combat history of the Air Force's top MiG-killing wing in the Korean War is the subject of this 2002 book by noted aviation author Warren Thompson; #6 in Osprey's short-lived and sorely missed 'Frontline Colour' series. Though the definitive history of the 4th Wing remains Larry Davis' 4TH FW IN THE KOREAN WAR; Thompson's book is a fine history in its own right and one that air combat enthusiasts will want to pick up.Committed to action in November 1950; the 4th FW scored its first kill in December. It ended the war with 506 kills and boasted a rafter of aces including Jabara; Gibson; Baker; Thyng; Davis; Marshall; Fernandez; Garrison and others. Four of the five top-scoring USAF aces - Jabara; Davis; Baker and Fernandez - were 4th FW jocks; Davis winning the only Medal of Honor awarded to fighter pilots in the Korean War. These guys were hell on wheels!Thompson's book; replete with dozens of excellently-reproduced color photographs; benefits from the inclusion of lengthy and quite interesting reminiscences from various pilots including Bruce Hinton; Bill Littlefield; James Johnson; Drury Callahan; Albert Smiley and others. In terms of visual imagery and 'straight-from-the-source' info; this book can't be beat. It's a shame Osprey pulled the plug on this series before it ran its course. The other volumes in the series - covering F-51s; F-84s; F-80s; B-26s and F-86 fighter-bomber ops - are as well done and interesting as F-86 SABRES OF THE 4TH FIGHTER INTERCEPTOR WING. Pick up copies where you can find them; you won't regret it!
