The concluding part of John D Grainger's history of the Seleukids traces the tumultuous last century of their empire. In this period it was riven by dynastic disputes; secessions and rebellions; the religiously-inspired insurrection of the Jewish Maccabees; civil war and external invasion from Egypt in the West and the Parthians in the East. By the 80s BC; the empire was disintegrating; internally fractured and squeezed by the converging expansionist powers of Rome and Parthia. This is a fittingly; dramatic and colourful conclusion to John Grainger's masterful account of this once-mighty empire.

I immediately downloaded this book to hopefully read an unbiased rendition. In this I was disappointed. The book is well researched but promised to make no judgements. It does leave you with what the author judges to be the true reasons behind the debacles both at Slapton sands and the Channel S-boats attacks. If the author had left us just the facts; it would have been left to the reader to make judgements. The author exonerates Eisenhower very quickly on. The secrecy of Operation Overlord was of the utmost importance and could not be leaked in any way. Understood; however; this operation was dreadfully underplanned and under executed; and dropping the blame only on those certain captains and underlings distances Eisenhower from any involvement. He was Commander of SHAEF. He oversaw ALL operations; yet the author lets him slide. While I would have liked to see more of a comprehensive view of what SHAEF's involvement was (mainly Eisenhower) it is a very moving and interesting read about an operation in which many lives were lost in the atttempt to invade Europe. If nothing else it is a testimony to the men who gave their lives in the name of freedom.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
