Essential Islam: A Comprehensive Guide to Belief and Practice

audiobook Essential Islam: A Comprehensive Guide to Belief and Practice by Diane Morgan in History

Description

When Lieutenant Commander Heidi Kraft's twin son and daughter were fifteen months old; she was deployed to Iraq. A clinical psychologist in the US Navy; Kraft's job was to uncover the wounds of war that a surgeon would never see. She put away thoughts of her children back home; acclimated to the sound of incoming rockets; and learned how to listen to the most traumatic stories a war zone has to offer. One of the toughest lessons of her deployment was perfectly articulated by the TV show M*A*S*H: "There are two rules of war. Rule number one is that young men die. Rule number two is that doctors can't change rule number one." Some Marines; Kraft realized; and even some of their doctors; would be damaged by war in ways she could not repair. And sometimes; people were repaired in ways she never expected. RULE NUMBER TWO is a powerful firsthand account of providing comfort admidst the chaos of war; and of what it takes to endure.

Review
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Especially appropriate and recommended for both academic and community library Islamic Studies reference collectionsBy Midwest Book ReviewFully one-quarter of the Earth's population is Muslim; holding allegiance to the Abrahamic faith called Islam. Fundamentalist Muslim terrorists are to Islam what fundamentalist preachers like Jim Jones or priests like Torquemada or groups like the Klu Klux Klan are to Christianity. That's why; especially because of what's presently happening around the world; "Essential Islam: A Comprehensive Guide to Belief and Practice" by Diane Morgan (Adjunct Professor of Religion and Philosophy; Wilson College; Chambersburg; Pennsylvania) is so timely and needed. Especially recommended for non-specialist general readers wanting a solid overview of one of the world's most prominent religions in general; as well as western students of Islam in particular; "Essential Islam" is a superbly presented history from inception of Islam under the prophet Mohammad; and through its various factions and evolutions down to the present day. Of special note is that Islam is not restricted to the Middle East; but adherents are to be found in every nation around the globe. Enhanced with the inclusion of a glossary; a selected bibliography; and a comprehensive index; "Essential Islam" is especially appropriate and recommended for both academic and community library Islamic Studies reference collections.
