Enemy Coast Ahead - Uncensored (Soft Cover)

ePub Enemy Coast Ahead - Uncensored (Soft Cover) by Guy Gibson in History

Description

European and Arab versions of the Crusades have little in common. For Arabs; the twelfth and thirteenth centuries were years of strenuous efforts to repel a brutal and destructive invasion by barbarian hordes. In "The Crusades Through Arab Eyes"; Amin Maalouf has sifted through the works of a score of contemporary Arab chroniclers of the Crusades; eyewitnesses and often participants in the events. He retells their stories in their own vivacious style; giving us a vivid portrait of a society rent by internal conflicts; and shaken by a traumatic encounter with an alien culture. He retraces two critical centuries of Middle Eastern history; and offers fascinating insights into some of the forces that shape Arab and Islamic consciousness today.

As an American the only exposure I had to the raid was the movie DAMBUSTERS. I truly enjoyed the chapters leading up to the attack. I learned Gibson had flown twin engine bombers and night fighters before flying Lancasters. His early was stories ave very interesting and worth reading to get the atmosphere in England in 1939. On his very first bombing mission I was stunned when he wrote it was the first time he had ever taken off with an actual load of real bombs! There are many great stories like that. I learned many facts I did not know before I read the book. Well worth it. Amazing man; amazing history.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Enemy Coast AheadBy rudy willerAbout 63 years ago I read this book and I did like it very much. As a matter of fact I read this book that time in its Dutch translation version; which was called "In zoeklicht en afweer vuur". I admired the writer Guy Gibson very much; not only as a World War Two crack pilot; but especially as a writer. Guy Gibson was a great observer; he had a vivid writing style and he made his story not only exciting to read; he also gave the reader a lot of interesting details.---So; for some time now I tried to rekindle my memory of this book. I wanted to read it again and now in its english version. So; I found it at AMAZON and I promptly purchased it.
