Eisenhower; with particular focus on his years as a five-star general and his two terms as president of the United States. Johnson chronicles Ike’s modest childhood in Kansas; his West Point education; and his swift rise through the military ranks; culminating in his appointment as Supreme Commander of the Allied forces during World War II. Johnson then paints a rich portrait of Eisenhower’s presidency; many elements of which speak to American politics today: his ability to balance the budget; his mastery in managing an oppositional Congress; and his prescient warnings about the military-industrial complex. Short but great summary of the life of a great American soldier and President.By Joseph SanFilippoI enjoyed learning more about the man who rose through the ranks to lead the Allied Forces in WWII; the war my dad fought in and was disabled by gunfire. My dad was a big fan of Eisenhower's and now I understand why. Ike put the well being of his men at the top of his list of priorities and because of this; he saved hundreds of thousands of American lives by his military genius and patience in making absolutely certain each battle was win-able and casualties minimized. The book also reveals Eisenhower's genius and ability to get things done as president; things he gets little credit for; like civil rights.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Don't waste your moneyBy David M.It's embarrassing that would sell this book for $12. There's more info on Eisenhower on wikipedia than in this book. This isn't a book its a pamphlet. Don't waste your money.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An easy readBy brandonA very incomplete book but enough for someone who just needs a "once over lightly " view of Eisenhower. Like many of Johnson's recent works it is shallow and lacks detailed editing. There are some inaccuracies and unsupported assertions. However it is an easy and pleasant read and still leaves one wondering at the expansive repertoire Johnson has put together over a very long life. He should stop writing before he loses it and duds his reputation.
