Egypt vs. Greece and the American Academy: The Debate Over the Birth of Civilization

PDF Egypt vs. Greece and the American Academy: The Debate Over the Birth of Civilization by Molefi Kete Asante; Ama Mazama in History

Description

The debate among those who sought to abolish slavery in America was a crucial one in the history of the nation; for it raised a great many questions we are still debating. Reading Ms. Kraditor's study of the abolitionists' thinking on the goals; strategy; and tactics of their cause; the modern reader can hardly escape seeing parallels with present-day politics and protest movements. Ms. Kraditor focuses on arguments over the role of women in the Anti-Slavery Society; over religion; and over political action. She sees a struggle between "respectability" and radical action which continues to reverberate. "From first to last this lucid; important book challenges preconceptions. Obviously Professor Kraditor intends to provoke critical reexamination of many points she raises; and in this she is brilliantly successful.... Her book is a fruitful exploration into the history of a great movement."―Harold M. Hyman; Book World. "Original; perceptive; provocative."―American Historical Review

Diop is mentioned for his research that was conducted at a symposium that revealed that the ancient Egyptians were in fact people of color. Even today; the oppressor tries to deny Africa and have no proof of their findings; where this book offers plenty. As a student acquiring my PhD in Religious studies with emphasis on Christian Philosophy and Apologetics; I find this book of great substance in my studies. Everyone tries to deny the truth; but evidence will prove otherwise. Talk is cheap. This book is highly recommended. Thanks in advance.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It's not culture versus culture. It's the revival of oppressed history.By josephThis book is not what the cover would make it seem. This is not the battle of ethnocentric views that those who normally buy into them would want this to be.No; this is a very well out together book containing lots of obscure information that definitely merits looking into.I have come to really appreciate what I've read from this author. I think that anyone who approaches this with an open non defensive or offensive mind will walk away the better for it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting read.By VeronicaThough I don't subscribe to Afrocentricity; this book shows how Africa played an integral role in the academy. Of course the reader must be aware that the author is coming from a strong premise that one country did the scholarship and another took credit for it. It does not leave room for acculturation or buiding on the cultures of surrounding nations. So; as long as one is aware of the point of view the book offers interesting historical facts.
