Eggmühl 1809: Storm Over Bavaria (Campaign)

ebooks Eggmühl 1809: Storm Over Bavaria (Campaign) by Ian Castle in History

Description

The War of Gods traces the intimate relationship between religion; politics and social issues in Latin America over the last three decades; as liberation theology has reinterpreted the vocation of the Catholic Church and as Protestantism has made inroads on traditional Catholic strongholds. In the 1960s liberation theology addressed itself to the problems of a continent racked by poverty and oppression. Comprising a network of localized communities and pastoral organizations; it soon became something much more than a doctrinal current. Liberationist Christianity defined itself in a multitude of social struggles; particularly in Brazil and Central America. Many of the most momentous events in the continent’s recent history—the Nicaraguan revolution; the development of the PT (Workers’ Party) in Brazil; the tortuous ascent of President Aristide in Haiti and the uprising in Chiapas—have borne witness to the influence of a distinctive liberationist Christianity. Michael Löwy proposes here a new interpretation—inspired by the sociology of culture—both of liberation theology and of the rival religious projects in Latin America.

This is one in a series of brief analyses of campaigns published by Osprey. The book is 95 pages long (counting the index). In the book; we see the developing campaign between Austrians and Napoleon's allied army (featuring; for instance; Bavarian units). The work follows the standard "Campaign" format--background of the campaign; opposing armies and their leaders (although top leaders beyond Archduke Charles--leading Austrian forces--and Napoleon Bonaparte are not discussed; as they are with most of the works in this series). The book features orders of battle (there were a series of battles during this campaign); maps (some of which are not overly helpful); and the battlefield today. The centerpiece; of course; is the description of the series of battles; culminating in the conflict at Eggmuhl. The series of battles began at Landshut. Then; the Austrians attacked the isolated forces of the very capable French commander Marshal Davout at Teugn-Hausen. There followed struggles at Abensburg; Landshut (again); and--finally--Eggmuhl. Napoleon's forces won the battles--but did not crush the Austrian forces.A good work. Issues? Maps were sometimes not so helpful. It would have been nice to learn a bit more about the major commanders on both sides. There is so much detail on individual unit moves that it can get confusing to the reader what is actually going on and what the big picture might be.12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. The Emperor of BattlesBy Kevin F. KileyIan Castle has written an excellent history of the first half of the Campaign of 1809. Using both Austrian and French sources; he has produced a totally reliable; well-written account of the Austrian invasion of Bavaria that almost caught the French by surprise. The account is balanced; authoritative; and logically presented. Errors and omissions are few; the most glaring being the often repeated mistake of naming Napoleon's Chief of Staff; Marshal Berthier; as the commander of the French Army of Germany before Napoleon's arrival from Paris; which he was definitely not. Other than that; however; the author has presented one of the best modern narratives of this campaign that can be used as a reliable reference by historians; enthusiasts; and wargamers. The artwork by Christa Hook is excellent; lively; and presents an accurate picture of the uniforms; deployments; and actions of the campaign. The other illustrations in this volume are superb and greatly enhance the excellent narrative. This book is highly recommended and is one of the best of the campaign series yet produced by Osprey.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Well-researched information on the origin of the campaign; opposing forces; commanders; strategy and the decisive battlesBy Stephen P. FordI have been very pleased with and impressed with the quality of Osprey publications. The Campaign series are focused on military campaigns from ancient times through the current era. I have found the books in the Osprey Campaign series to be a great source and frequently the only source for well-researched information on military campaigns especially in the ancient campaigns through early 20th century campaigns.
