A fine collection of memories and stories of the soldiers of Kershaw's South Carolina Brigade at the battle of Gettysburg.By Joe Owen"Echoes From Gettysburg: South Carolina's Memories and Images;" by J. Keith Jones;( Fox Run Publishing; 2016; 415 pages.) Keith Jones has kept up the fine qualities of his books about the battle of Gettysburg as seen by the soldiers of the Confederacy in his outstanding book "Echoes From Gettysburg: South Carolina's Memories and Images." This book tells the stories of the soldiers of Kershaw's; McGowan's/Perrin's Infantry Brigades and Wade Hampton's Cavalry Brigade and their experiences of battle during the battle of Gettysburg; July 1-3; 1863.Using primary and secondary stories published in southern newspapers weeks and years after the battle; Jones; has collected fascinating stories. and allowed the soldiers to have their voices being heard 153 years after the battle. Newspapers such as the Anderson (SC) Intelligencer; Aiken (SC) Standard; Atlanta (GA) Journal and other papers the soldiers wrote to the newspapers describing; at times in graphic detail their memories of fighting during those hot and intense three days of battle in early July 1863. Also included are obituaries of the soldiers; and in the obituaries the writer told of the soldiers actions of battle; such as Captain William W. Williams of the 1st Carolina Infantry; who carried his regiment's battle flag throughout the battle. Other great stories were published in Confederate Veteran Magazine; personal letters to family and friends; and journals and diaries from the soldiers. Each of the articles are a great read that focus on the first hand accounts of the largest battle on the North American continent. Some of the articles were written over 50 years after the battle; however; the soldiers still remembered in detail what they did; hear; and saw during the battle.Included also are maps of Kershaw's South Carolina Brigade and their movements during the battle. Brief biographies of selected soldiers who told their experiences highlights their lives after the battle back in South Carolina and other States where the soldiers lived after the war.The chapters are divided by regiments and put together; make an outstanding history of the famed Kershaw's South Carolina Brigade at the battle of Gettysburg. The soldiers of Kershaw's brigade would be greatly appreciative of this fine book written by Keith Jones; as well as the soldiers of Georgia would deeply appreciated Keith's other fine book "Georgia Remembers Gettysburg."This book is a MUST HAVE for any reader; enthusiast; scholar or student of the Civil War to have in their library!
