Great Over View of The First Three Generations of JetsBy JCALThis is a great overall view of the first three generations of jets taking the reader through about the 1st 10-12 years of development. The chapters are broken down into a chronological sequence of the branch of service; type aircraft (Interceptor; NIght Fighter; etc.). I bought the book entirely for the illustrations of the "paper" proposed/design study airplanes during an especially prolific era. Included are quite a few dark-horse designs by Curtiss; Goodyear etc. Each aircraft gets placed in context along with it's competitors with (If awarded) a final summary on the aircraft that won where applicable. Pleasant surprises included a brief (very) of the engine manufacturers and a section of fairly incisive biographies of some of the prominent engineers of the period and the aircraft they were involved with. I also found some of the drawings very enlightening; the evolution of the F-86 from very straight (Almost B-45 Tornado like lines.) conservative lines optimized for production into the final form we're familiar with today. The profiles were nice; but nothing special. (I did not deduct a star due to quality.) I would give the book 4.5 stars if I could.Recommended for those with an interest in early jets; aircraft development; or cancelled/unflown projects.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
