Dreaming in the World's Religions: A Comparative History

DOC Dreaming in the World's Religions: A Comparative History by Kelly Bulkeley in History

Description

Nineteenth-century women reformers such as the radical abolitionists have frequently been seen as having abandoned the constraints of religion in order to pursue their personal and political goals. The subjects of this book - Angelina Grimke; Sarah Grimke; Sallie Holley; Abby Kelley; and Lucretia Mott - did indeed reject what they found to be the repressive features of the Christianity of their day. Their religiosity; however; remained fundamental to their world view. In this book; Anna M. Speicher explores the dimentions of this evolving faith; which was critical in shaping their decisions and actions throughout their lives.

HackettBrilliant author with great humility about what he knows and doesn't know about the role of dreaming in our collective lives; historically and prospectively. I had the great pleasure of his speaking in a class at Harvard Divinity School. He is a wise and learned man; who is not over-impressed with his own talents.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating Dreams in ReligionBy Susan A. SantoA very detailed guide to dreams in religion; including Christianity; Islam; Judaism; Buddhism; Hinduism; religions of Africa; and Native American religions. Fascinating examples! You learn a great deal about the religion as well as the dreams. What was most interesting to me was in learning about how Christianity has suppressed interest in dreams.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. i appreciated the easy and informal style of writingBy truthi appreciated the easy and informal style of writing. bulkeley pulled together a variety of historical/religious ideas and yet provided specific quotes giving a delicious flavor to the book. it's the kind of book whose information you mull over while meditating---a gestalt of our human family's character.
