Highly entertaining; anecdotal account of a diver's career in the Royal Navy and commercial sat divingBy chr2005This is an excellent book that covers Tony Grooms diving career from callow youth joining the Royal Navy to commercial saturation diving.Broadly speaking it can be broken down into three parts: Training - becoming a Royal Navy clearance diver himself; travelling the world and training new divers. This is an often hilarious account of a young man and the culture of the Navy and the diving fraternity. The Falklands - suddenly the pace changes and the author uses his wartime diary to share his experiences of the conflict in the South Atlantic. Commercial diving - after leaving Navy; the author has to adjust to civilian life and shares more amusing anecdotes as a commercial saturation diver doing deep dives for the oil industry around the world.This is an anecdote-driven book that is very readable. You will be bursting out with laughter at some of the stories; while the Falklands section with leave you with an impression of how stressful the situation was in difficult conditions. The final section is also amusing; and tries to convey some of the realities of deep commercial diving - difficult; given the long periods of tedium associated with that job. It tails off a bit in the end; as it becomes clear that the author is about to enter a new phase of his life; one where it's not clear what impact diving will continue to have for him.The book is very accessible for non-divers. There's enough technical detail to understand the human aspect of the operations; without burdening the stories with too much of a learning curve.
