While his entries aren't as detailed and long as some other diaries it's a very good insight into the life of a young private from North Carolina. He's a very likeable young boy; you see him mature into his role as a soldier; his accounts of daily life; battles; admiration for General Lee; and ultimately life in a yankee prison. I'd recommend to anyone who is interested in a first hand account of any of this; the Southern cause or wants to know what it may have been like for their own Tar Heel relatives.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. C native you will find Louis' descriptions of everyday soldier's life during this period of great interest.By jackie s hollandBeing from N.C. and a student of the Civil War; I found this book very interesting. The author; Leon Louis named towns and places in my state that I live near and described the way they looked to him 150 years ago. Even if you are not a N.C native you will find Louis' descriptions of everyday soldier's life during this period of great interest.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A North Carolina infantryman's diaryBy Perry GlasgowLouis Leon's book left me wanting to read more; but there was a war on at the time; and it is a short book. I was fascinated to read the descriptions from his diary on the miles number of miles they marched; and the conditions the troops lived and fought under. It does lack in details at points in the book leaving the reader to want more. However; you can't beat the book for the price; and if you're studying the troops from North Carolina it should be read.
