It is based on the personal diary of the Commanding Officer at that time (then) CDR James Stavridis and shipboard activities are seen through his eyes. Taylor sailors will recognize the similarity between evolutions on the Barry and those on the Taylor 30-50 years earlier. The equipment may be modern; the crew may be from the next generation and the ocean may be the Atlantic; but the leadership and most of the operational issues are the same. Much has not changed. I got an appreciation for how long a sea tour can be; which was more than two years in this case. I also got an appreciation for the complexities of operating naval ships close to each other; e.g. 100 ft when taking on supplies. The author focuses on his social activities on shore; the novels he read on his cruise and expressing wonderful thoughts about his fellow officers. His time in command included a technical marvel of a ship; and participation in interesting international events; stormy weather; etc. but it is left to the reader to imagine the details. Patrick O'Brian's books provide a better view of the life a warship commander.
