This is the first-hand story of what was done and seen and felt on each side in the battle of the Monitor and the Merrimac. The actual experiences on both vessels are pictured; in one case by the commander of the Monitor; then a lieutenant; and the next in rank; Lieutenant Greene; and in the other by Chief-Engineer Ramsay of the Merrimac. Clearly such a record of personal experiences has a place by itself in the literature of the subject.

FascinatingBy CustomerFascinating story of the men who fought the civil war and their everyday lives in the service2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Real life serves as fascinating narrativeBy NewreaderAn intriguing portrayal of several Allegheny City and Greater Pittsburgh based Civil War soldiers over nine months of service. Learn about this nine-month regiment in their own words from uncovered personal journals. The soldiers comments are then juxtaposed with the Pittsburgh Gazette articles that were written regularly to inform the public; mostly Allegheny City family back home; of what their relatives were experiencing on the front. It is particularly fascinating to imagine how technology today would make this situation completely different in terms of the expediency of information shared with the home-front; which was frequently incomplete; often wrong; and at best delayed. The author's comments are brief and serve mainly to explain words or situations to uneducated Civil War readers (like me) including offering biographies related to those who are prevalent in the writing to offer a context for the reader. The basis of the language of this narrative is collected solely from these other texts. The bulk of the work is a fascinating tale of experiences about a battle (Fredericksburg) that is rarely discussed; presumably due to the failings of the North at the time. Enjoy!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent! A well researched bookBy BetteAlthough I am still working my way through this book I can tell you that it is excellent! Mr. George has interfiled the diaries of three soldiers; speeches and news reports by date to tell the story of the 123rd Pennsylvania Infantry. I am no history buff but am interested in his book because my great-great grandfather was in this unit. It is fascinating to read of the hardships they endured. Everything in his book is well documented and in many places he interjects an explanation or definition to aid the reader. Clearly Mr. George put a ton of work into this book. Good job!
