Daughters of the Bear: An Anthology of Korean Women's Stories

DOC Daughters of the Bear: An Anthology of Korean Women's Stories by From Jennifer Mathews in History

Description

In Europe it was called the Age of Discovery. To the rest of the world; it often meant slavery; epidemic disease; cultural genocide; and wholesale social and economic changes. What happened in the period when Europe first came in contact with the rest of the world? In this new edition of Brian Fagan's Clash of Cultures; the best-selling author offers a series of fascinating cases on the impact of cultural contact; including cultures such as those of the Huron fur traders; South African Khoi Khoi; Tahitians; Japanese; and Aztecs. Each case provides a description of the pre-European culture; the short-term impacts of European contact; and long-term changes caused by the clash of two cultures. Fagan also explores the many advances in the general literature on this period such as the "people without history;" world systems analysis; and the debate over Captain Cook. Ideal for courses in cultural anthropology; world history; historical archaeology; ethnic studies; or area studies; as well as for the general reader.

I felt a great deal of admiration for the Korean women in the accounts who fought against all obstacles while retaining their dignity and character. The book also illustrated the long march all women of the world have been on to achieve control over their own destinies. Things have changed all over the world and will continue to change even in the 'hermit' nation of Korea.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A window into intimate stories...By S. HudginsThis book could be a facinating addition to a personal library or a variety of classrooms. It is both written translated by Korean women and carefully arranged to maintain the authentic voice of the original authors. Some of them are professional writer some are simply telling their stories. (This is all in the introduction but it is absolutely true makes the stories read true.) From grandmothers who have witnessed war loss to young career women who aren't following family tradition; the stories are interesting and real. I read it over several months; allowing time to digest each story. It's an insight into what's unique to their culture and what's univeral in women's lives. Highly recommended!2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Over fifty Korean women provide nonfiction surveysBy Midwest Book ReviewOver fifty Korean women provide nonfiction surveys which recollect their experiences in Korean; from a merchant who escaped with her sisters in a rowboat under Russian gunfire to a young professional's secret wedding to a co-worker. Different generations of Korean women thus provide a literary and social exploration juxtaposing memoirs with insights on family; Korean society and culture; and more; in Daughters Of The Bear: An Anthology Of Korean Women's Stories.
