Originally published in 1998 and a best seller in its hardcover and paperback publications; Gary Kinder’s Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea tells the story of the sinking of the SS Central America; a side-wheel steamer carrying nearly six hundred passengers returning from the California Gold Rush; two hundred miles off the Carolina coast in September 1857. Over four hundred lives and twenty-one tons of California gold were lost. It was the worst peacetime disaster at sea in American history; a tragedy that remained lost in legend for over a century. In the 1980s; a young engineer from Ohio set out to do what no one; not even the U.S. Navy; had been able to do: establish a working presence on the deep ocean floor and open it to science; archaeology; history; medicine; and recovery. The SS Central America became the target of his project. After years of intensive efforts; Tommy Thompson and the Columbus-America Discovery Group found the Central America in eight thousand feet of water; and in October 1989 they sailed into Norfolk with her recovered treasure: gold coins; bars; nuggets; and dust; plus steamer trunks filled with period clothes; newspapers; books; journals; and even an intact cigar sealed under water for 130 years. Life magazine called it “the greatest treasure ever found.â€Gary Kinder tells an extraordinary tale of history; human drama; heroic rescue; scientific ingenuity; and individual courage. Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea is a testament to the human will to triumph over adversity. It is also a great American adventure story of the opening of Earth’s last frontier.

Painstakingly researched and perfectly relatable as Carew has managed to so thoroughly understand the records and history she had to digest; that she condenses it in such a way that allows anyone less familiar with the subject and times to "get it"! The many well placed photographs give a more intricate understanding of her father's extraordinary accomplishments; as well as the family history that glues it all together. Though Yanks; like myself (despite how much British culture I thought I'd absorbed from my wife and inlaws over many years) and other folks beyond the "empire" may be googling; etc. a fair piece of Carew's descriptive text; the authenticity it brings forth really solidifies generations of history woven into this wonderful read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Hero or Dad?By Tom RaleighA fascinating family history both for the journey of Tom Carew; the Dad of the story; and for the author; his daughter.Great historical background also on Europe as war ended and the East where war still raged. Also; a stark reminder of the stupidity of the colonial powers post war; who failed to recognise the legitimate claims for independence; not just Britain but France as well.A light shone on certain aspects of the War and the part played in it by a small group of men and women. Also a tale of the damage caused to families when one partner is shaped by events outside the life knowledge of his spouse and family.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
