Description

An impressive achievement by a scholar well-versed in the field." ―Virginia Yans-McLaughlinSweeping in scope and prodigious in research; Gabaccia is able to make insightful comparisons between these female newcomers in both the past and the present and between the experiences of the foreign-born and other minorities in American society." ―John BodnarThis long-needed study of women "from the other side" examines the experience of women immigrants as they came to the United Stated from all corners of the earth. Donna Gabaccia traces continuities that characterize women of both the nineteenth-century European and Asian migrations and the present-day Third World migrations. Foreign-born women; even more than men; experienced sharp tensions between communal; familial traditions and U.S. expectations of individualism and voluntarism. She also discovers strong parallels between the lives of foreign-born women and the women of America's native-born racial minorities.

I read it all in one sitting; because I couldn't put it down. The exploits of Johnson; by far; surpass anything a fiction writer could imagine. In fact; some of his life stories inspired fictional characters like Robert Redford in "Jeremiah Johnson." This book gives us a glimpse of life during a time where there is little documentation; which is truly unfortunate. This has adventure from beginning til end. I highly recommend it.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A must read for those interested in the early westBy recon buffIn the early 1980's I had an original copy of Crow Killer. I think this one is different or by a different author. In the original it told of John Johnston's escape from the Blackfeet; but he crawled for a considerable distance. He had been beaten by the Blackfeet and was infected on his back with maggots. He awoke during the night after his escape to find a great "White Bear" feeding on the maggots which had eaten all the dead flesh on his back. The bear ate the maggots then left. The Mountain Men of that era called Grizzly a white bear bear. It is commonly referred to as a "Silvertip" now. This book is very much worth the time to read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. very good book.By banditI had no idea;very interesting book. no comparsion to the movie.but still my most favorite movie.
