It skips a LOT of issues about the war they were fighting. It treats too lightly on the destruction of the South Pacific forces early in the war. No information on the US torpedo that hampered US forces until the war was almost half over. While I did enjoy most of the book; I didn't feel like there was a lot of "meat on the bone".The book was originally a 1943 publication. At the time there was a lot censorship in place as the war was still being fought. A good Navy man would also be politically correct about what he would put in print. Still; it just seemed a little thin to me.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Guts and GritBy Joseph C. NelsonThe writer made the conflict in the South Pacific real to me. The U.S. Navy lived up to its reputation for intrepidity against an enemy with superior numbers and resources while we were still rebuilding our own forces. Newly minted warrior sailors held their own while our nation rearmed our selves while fighting the enemy on two fronts. Our boys went through the grind of unending boredom and then the terror of combat; steered a steady course; and won the conflict with guts and grit.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Settle in for a different enjoyable perspective to a WWII Pacific Naval book; if this is "your" subject then this book is forBy GThoroughly enjoyable read; a book I wish had a continuation to the end of the war.I was disappointed that the author and publisher didn't add an addendum after the war that would have filled in all the blanks single capital letters abbreviations used at the time of initial publication.
