Colonial North America was not only a battleground for furs and land; but also for allegiances and even souls. In the three-sided struggle for empire; the English and French colonists were locked in heated competition for native allies and religious converts. Axtell sharply contrasts the English efforts to civilize the Indians with the French willingness to accept native lifestyles; and reveals why the struggle for control over the continent became a fascinating contest of cultures between shrewd opponents lasting nearly 150 years.

It may take a little longer as the style of writing is from the 1700's but no big deal. I found myself re reading a few sections more than once; but very good work.Every American should read this wonderful work; actually every man who cherish liberty and freedom should read this. The special balance of government and liberty and freedoms is a universal struggle and thus this is applicable to everyman in every nation.Breaks down the precarious balance of powers and the motivators behind them. I cannot say enough about Thomas Paine's Common Sense.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An Important WorkBy CustomerThis volume of Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" is an important primary document and had proven itself invaluable to understanding the feelings of the colonist at that time. Paine's writes with a veracity and vivacity that is awe inspiring. Poignant; simple; yet deceptively elegant; Thomas Paine lays out the argument --both fiscal and militaristic -- for declaring independence. Now; more than ever; is this book needed: to be read; to be studied; to be understood. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. a brief book to remember how hard it was to make the United states and the brave men that didBy B. J. HillI enjoyed the things he had written regarding why he thought America should become a country of it's own. A very intelligent man and a interesting short book to let you know what the original states had to consider and why we are so glad they did..
