Combat Boots

DOC Combat Boots by William Russell in History

Description

Unless WE Tell It . . . It Never Gets Told! focuses on the Black history and the Civil Rights History of Jacksonville; Florida; and examines racism in Jacksonville; Florida; the state of Florida; and America. The book consists of two sections; "Real Stories about Blacks in Jacksonville; Florida" and "Confronting Racism." It is Rodney L. Hurst Sr.; civil rights activist; and author of the award-winning personal account of Jacksonville's 1960 sit-in demonstrations and Ax Handle Saturday; It was never about a hot dog and a Coke®! second book. Stories of the historical achievements of great Black Americans --including Blacks in Jacksonville; Florida--are woefully unknown; as are many stories about the Civil Rights Movement. Unless WE Tell It . . . It Never Gets Told! tells some of those stories while also focusing on racism. In the academia there is a saying; "If it is not written down; it did not happen;" and Black history is seldom written on the pages of American history. Racism is also subject matter that does not make its way onto the pages of American history and is often treated as a taboo subject or a four-letter word. Those who tire of hearing about racism should ask; what if you were Black and had to live through the daily vulgarity of racism? If you sit in a history classroom and only read about the contributions made by white Americans and white Europeans; then the "learning field" is never level. It is downright dishonest that American history as portrayed in history textbooks essentially makes the statement that Blacks made no salient contributions to this country. Blacks helped to develop this country before; during; and after slavery. You have to teach the truth without regard to what the textbooks proclaim.

A Must Read For Veterans of All AgesBy Mario PacellaI recently finished reading William Russell's latest book titled; "Combat Boots" and I was encouraged with his approach and delighted with it's contents. Aside from it's historical accuracy; Mr. Russell has compiled a collection of short stories that span a period of thirty years from post WW11 to the Korean DMZ War. The stories themselves transcend time. Some of the stories are filled with that heart warming humor that only a soldier can appreciate. Others bring the reader into the heat of battle during the Korean War with a prespective of the battle from both sides. Still others show the bravery; valor and scarifice of the U.S. airmen who flew secert missions for the French at the battle of Dien Bien Phu that ultimately led to the begining of our entanglement in Viet Nam.And finally; while the war raged on in Viet Nam; there was another war being fought along the Korean DMZ that few Americans were aware of unless you were one of the soldiers who fought there and has now become known to all as the DMZ War. Here Mr. Russell has opened a window to the memories of our youth to those of us who served and fought on the DMZ.In short; Mr. Russell has brought to light the recognition that is so much deserved of our fighting men who have too often been forgotten. If you ever had the honor to wear a U.S. military uniform; then William Russsell's "Combat Boots" is a must read for veterans of all ages.Mario PacellaDMZ Veteran
