A Good Textbook; but Still a TextbookBy Matthew Simmons3 stars means: Ok/Good Book and would recommend in the right instances. This book as it sets out to do gives a generic overview of Early Modern Europe. It lacks depth in many areas but this is to be expected of any textbook which seeks to chronicle the history of an entire continent through a period of 500 years. It is written in what I would consider a very readable style which allows for students to really become engaged in the grand narrative of history.Really better to be read along with the other course materials to develop what would hopefully be a deeper understanding of the time. Certain chapters have a more social/cultural focus which is a good change from the political driven narrative; but they are lacking in depth of discussion on the differing nature of the individual countries within Europe. It really comes down to what you expect. If you want a normal textbook to give a narrative for the events then this book will work as well as the Hunt textbook or any other out there on the period.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hard to readBy JaneJaneWhile there are a lot of details in this book; they are not presented in a very linear order. Timeframes will jump between 500-1000 years from one paragraph to the next! It's hard to keep track of when; why; and how events occur with all the details and time jumping. Perhaps a good text for a high level college class or if you have previous knowledge on this part of history; but not good for intro level classes!
