Through a study of the writers of the post-New Testament period; this book shows how "Christianity" was forged as "the religion of empire;" undermining the New Testament's proclamation of Jesus as upholder of the "religion of creation;" two categories laid out in Howard-Brook's earlier volume; "Come Out; My People": God's Call Out of Empire in the Bible and Beyond (Orbis 2010). Using writers from Alexandria (Clement; Origen; and Athanasius) and North Africa (Tertullian; Cyprian and Augustine) as test cases; Howard-Brook traces how Platonic and Stoic philosophy on the one hand; and Roman imperial culture; on the other; were taken for granted by these writers in creating"Christianity."

BrookoverA Thoroughly stunning narrative to explain "what has been and is now data depicting past; present reality and a future scenario of projections about the year 2050. Wow! No ways to 'fix' the past or 'adjust' the present. BUT...but there is time to begin grappling with reality and instituting improvements in thinking about our state and changing policies related to spending the necessary funds to better educate ALL Texas residents. The content depicts that It will be a tremedous task to gear up for equipping more people with above average knowledge and skills. A successful outcome could undergird a quality of life that is appropriate in the decades ahead. Without the needed changes in mindset and educational funding priorities the prospects for Texas are dire.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
