California: A History

ePub California: A History by Andrew Rolle; Arthur C. Verge in History

Description

This study of modernism's high imperial; occult-exotic affiliations presents many well-known figures from the period 1880-1960 in a new light. Modernism and the Occult traces the history of modernist engagement with 'irregular'; heterodox and imported knowledge.

OsgoodThis is a well written comprehensive history of California without being too academic. As a Californian; I ran into a few issues which would probably be considered nit-picking; such as the spelling of Bridalveil Falls and the fact that the Terry-Broderick duel happened not in the city of San Mateo; as would be construed here; but in San Mateo County just across the county line with San Francisco. The biggest surprise for me was in chapter about major architects of California. Every single one mentioned was male. Where is Julia Morgan? As stated on Wikipedia: "Morgan was the first woman to be admitted to the architecture program at l'École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the first woman architect licensed in California."She designed hundreds of buildings in California; including W.R. Hearst's "castle" at San Simeon; now a state park. She was awarded; posthumously; the AIA Gold Medal; the first female architect to receive the honor. This is a rather glaring omission; not only from a woman's standpoint; but because most Californians who know anything about our architectural heritage; know about Julia Morgan.Otherwise; an excellent job of compacting an awful lot of information into one book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
