G. Somerskell - Professor Emeritus of History.Published by the University of Alabama. A fine job so well wriiten and presented !As a Film-maker specialising in researching and writing screenplays of truehistoric events; wars and characters in history; and noting with astonishmentthat no feature-film over a century had ever been produced on the incredible story of the first CSS "Alabama" of the American Civil War; and mindful that forebears ofmy Wexford Ireland roots of the Allen clan had emigrated from Ireland to serve the Confederate cause; I determined some years ago to reaearch and create the scriptto make the feature-film CSS "Alabama" after realizing that every year at @mardiGras' time the colourful Tweede Nuwe Jaar minstrel troops which dance annually through the streets of Cape Town singing "Daar Kom de Alabama" and the praises of the notorious American 'Rebel' ship ; which on her first arrival in the Bay under Tabe Mountain found ; engaged with and prized the Union ship "Sea Bride" less than a canon-shot aay from Robben Island(then a leper colony) - where later Mr Mandela would be confined for 27years.The book itself is an absolute masterpiece; and includes the Liverpool shipyard GA drawings I urgently need in the development and planning of this film.Professor Somerskell gives a wealth of detail about the principle charactersin the "Alabama" story ; and I would like to suggest that if he and any of his associates are able; that they contact me so that we may discuss possibilities for involvement in the international co-production we have planned; with the likely inclusion of France; Ireland; Germany; the UK; and of course; the State of Alabama; the United States and South Africa.CSS "Alabama" was a fine ship; with fine crew. And her story has to be told;with its many lessons. Particularly in the context of the utter sadness of theof the American Civil War .CSS "Alabama" does not glorify war; but shows the chivalry of one of its greatest of Naval personalities ; and the closeness to civil war in England caused by thebuilding of 'L209' in Birkenhead.Thank You Professor Somerskell !PS- I have located an authentic fully certificated historic 'tall-ship' caableof being converted and rigged to become the CSS "Alabama". This ship; is one ofthree sometimes chartered by leading American film studios to star in theirproductions. I am negotiating to recreate the "Alabama" in the making of"CSS "Alabama". Not bad but I wanted more informationBy MachevilThe book about CSS Alabama its builder and the plans; is well written; however what I wanted was more detailed plans on the building of the ship. I should have bought the more current book. granted beyon the details that a desigener would want and desire the book is great.
