" One approach describing the passage of the dharma into China."By sunarrowDr.Beal attempts to layout the chronology ( according to European sources ) on Buddhism as it is practiced and observed in China. In this early work; Dr. Beal compares the two principal schools e.g.; the Hinayana and the Mahayana where he turns his attention so as to defer for concise accurate accountability. However deep such an undertaking this task entails ( and deep indeed is! ) Dr. Beal view is as a outsider ( non initiate ) one would have to bring into question many of the sources one considers; the point of view from the practitioners should be brought to bear. These two terms e.g.; Hinajana; he describes as a transliteration as the 'Little Vehicle'; the recognized term by practitioners is 'Lesser Vehicle' which appended to Theravadas; which translate to Doctrine of the elders. And 'Mahayana'; the greater Vehicle.Much of the leg work by Dr. Beal does nevertheless deserve praise in collecting numerous historical facts and presenting them uniquely as well as piecing together a presentation delineating an exhaustive task never done prior to his undertaking; while affording the reader an intelligent blueprint as to some important historical dates and facts! This is must read for any Sinologist or anyone interested in the spread of the Buddha Dharma.
