In history; China played an important role in the preservation of Mahayana texts. In the 7th century C.E. the Buddhist monk Xuanzang travelled extensively in India and returned with numerous Sutras and texts that he translated into Chinese. After the Moghul incursion into the Northern Indian Subcontinent; Buddhism disappeared from India and was entirely forgotten there. But some of the lost books of this time were preserved in Chinese and later translated into other languages. This book is an overview that might lead you to explore more out of curiosity.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. One StarBy Doug Ostobook by a christian missionary to convert chinese.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Decent overview but trapped in the missionary viewBy Mahendra AnÄgÄrikaThis is a book; rather a textbook; to be used by the Christian missionaries being sent to China in early 20th century. At some points; it has very valid observations and conclusions but most other times; the superiority conceit is quite evident. Good book for a Buddhist and a student of religions.
