The Arctic Convoys of WWII brought to life; one sailor at a time.By Scott BlakeMy primary interest in this splendid book comes from the inclusion of my father on page 117; Renald "Hank" Blake; who took part in PQ-15 on the S.S. Francis Scott Key. Having read the entire book; I commend Dave Schwind for the exhaustive research he did to make this book a reality. His descriptions of each convoy and the actions of the crews of the individual ships bring to vivid life the amazing service these men gave to their country and to assist the Russian government in the fight against Nazi Germany. Reading the biographies of the medal recipients is a real treat. The beautiful photos of the medals and the medal and ribbon bars are outstanding. I recommend this book for any serious student of military history. There are several very good books about the convoys and this book is right up at the top with the best of them. Dave; well done and thanks!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully Done !By Swiss TravelerI just received this book and spent most of the morning reading it; fascinated with the information; not just about my father (Howard S. Roberts); but also about the other recipients of Russian awards. I had to write this review to commend Dave Schwind on a masterful publication ... beautifully researched; compiled and written. What he has accomplished is a "gift" to the medal recipients still living and importantly; to the families of those brave men about whom he wrote. I know this was a Herculean task; and his efforts were incredibly successful!I am getting " Blue Seas; Red Stars" for each of my four children so they not only learn more about their grandfather; but can become educated; through Schwind's words and pictures; about this critically important aspect of World War II.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent interesting book!By MarkThis book is well deserving of a 5 STAR REVIEW. Mr. David Schwind’s book is a very professionally prepared piece of work. The book is very well organized and relays not commonly known facts about our nations heroic recipient’s that are part of the history of our country. This book is an excellent lesson in history. This book explains the actions along with providing pictures of the heroic servicemen who served their country proudly. My dad; Mario James Pagnotta who is included in the book did not talk about his Military Medals or the war. Not many people can say they knew that our World War II Serviceman were honored with Military Decorations from another country. This book provides excellent information about each of the Foreign Medals and the criteria for issue of these medals. This book is great reading material for all.
